Deep Linking Guide

admin | Link Buiding Tips | Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

One negative about having a blog is that many of your best posts will get lost in the archives. Posts that some people would link to stay stashed away to never be found.

Deep linking is that art of resurrecting your new posts by linking to them with your new posts. You should link to old posts and pages whenever you have the opportunity.  There are multiple benefits to linking to old posts. Search engines will rank your current posts better because they link to resources that better explain the content in them.

The largest benefit of deep linking is that you expose your new posts to your visitors. Exposing old posts gives them more material for them to get excited about. When people get excited about your work, they will link to it. Spammish techniques will only get you so far, and then you’re going to need to create some stuff that’s link worthy. Deep linking allows people to find your link worthy content.

Baiting A-Listers

One very important factor that can help you to acquire links is baiting big names bloggers in your niche. Almost all bloggers watch their stats very closely, so most of them will know it if you link to them.

Telling a funny story or otherwise using humor to bait an A-lister can significantly increase your chances of getting a link-back from them. If the story is funny, or tells enough good things about the A-lister, they will likely point their readers to the story with a link.

A link from the big time blog in your niche will be more worthwhile than many links from other sources. The links will pass more PageRank and will have more weight and value than other links from lesser sites.

I have seen several parody sites that follow big name bloggers, and most of them are able to easily get links from the bloggers who inspired them. A little bit of ‘hero worship’ can go a long way towards getting an A-listers attention.

Be The #1 Site

In our world of white and black hat search engine optimization, we are obsessed with achieving higher rankings. We freaking should be, getting ranked well in search engines can be the difference between raking it in and going broke. When we’re focusing on link building, I think we sometimes forget about the #1 link building strategy of all: being the #1 site in our niche.

The #1 site is the site that has the best content. It helps its readers the most. It is the most useful resource. Creating the best site in any niche will surely take a lot of time. Will it be worth it? Of course it will.

By simply being the best resource in your niche, you will naturally get linked to the most. You will also have a much easier time building links because everyone and their cousins will want to trade links with you.

Where does your site sit?

Post, Post, Post, Post, Post, Post, And Then Post Again

admin | Link Buiding Tips | Saturday, August 11th, 2007

If you’ve already added a blog to your site, you should post, post, post, and then post some more. Each time you publish a blog entry, the blog search engines will index it - if your blog is set to ping.

Posting once a month won’t get you much exposure, but posting multiple times each day can get you a significant amount. People are watching blog search engines and using them all day long, and adding content daily can bring ample visitors. Technorati and Google Blog Search are probably the most popular search engines that index and update their results when posts are published.

Posting multiple times per day can also help you to develop a following that your blog couldn’t get otherwise. Getting people hooked on coming back multiple times each day can drive your Alexa ranking through the rook - actually lower is better with Alexa so let’s say it this way: Getting people hooked on coming back multiple times per day can make your Alexa sink like the Titanic… that doesn’t sound right either. ;)

Lesson learned: post a lot and then post some more.

Linking Out - Choose To Wisely

admin | Linking Out | Thursday, August 9th, 2007

When choosing sites to link out to, you should use extreme caution. Linking to everyone and their dog can crush your search engine rankings.

If you’re linking to a website, you are essentially ‘voting’ for them. You are saying that you stand behind them as a quality site - at least that’s how search engines are going to look at it. If you link to sites that are garbage, your search engine rankings will definitely suffer.

Never link to sites that are in bad neighborhoods. Sites that aren’t indexed by Google will likely cause you a lot of pain. Usually there’s a reason they aren’t in Google’s index. They probably are shady or are too new - either way it won’t do you any good to link to them and will likely do you harm.

Linking To Trustworthy Sites Helps Your Rankings

When you link to trustworthy sites, it will help you to rank higher. If you’re writing an article about Google, it will be a more helpful article for your readers if you link to Google. You should link to authority sites and articles if you want to rank well.

You probably don’t need to worry about linking to sites that have good PageRank. The top sites in your niche are probably safe to link to, unless they do things that look shady, or will look shady to Google. If you want to know if it’s safe to link to a site, check their PageRank and make sure their site is in the Google index.
