Linking Out - Choose To Wisely
When choosing sites to link out to, you should use extreme caution. Linking to everyone and their dog can crush your search engine rankings.
If you’re linking to a website, you are essentially ‘voting’ for them. You are saying that you stand behind them as a quality site - at least that’s how search engines are going to look at it. If you link to sites that are garbage, your search engine rankings will definitely suffer.
Never link to sites that are in bad neighborhoods. Sites that aren’t indexed by Google will likely cause you a lot of pain. Usually there’s a reason they aren’t in Google’s index. They probably are shady or are too new - either way it won’t do you any good to link to them and will likely do you harm.
Linking To Trustworthy Sites Helps Your Rankings
When you link to trustworthy sites, it will help you to rank higher. If you’re writing an article about Google, it will be a more helpful article for your readers if you link to Google. You should link to authority sites and articles if you want to rank well.
You probably don’t need to worry about linking to sites that have good PageRank. The top sites in your niche are probably safe to link to, unless they do things that look shady, or will look shady to Google. If you want to know if it’s safe to link to a site, check their PageRank and make sure their site is in the Google index.
